Artist Statement

Matthew Collinson was born in Hertfordshire, England in 1984. Following a life-changing cancer diagnosis, he turned to art in search of purpose and understanding. What began as a personal exploration quickly became a lifelong commitment to creative expression.

His work combines acrylic paint, charcoal, oil paint, oil sticks, crayons, and texture to create emotionally charged, expressive paintings inspired by memory, conversation, personal experiences, and the constant movement of thought. Influenced by artists such as Van Gogh, Matisse, and De Kooning. He uses bold mark-making and intuitive processes to translate internal emotions into visual form.

At its core, his practice explores resilience, love, loss, self-discovery, and the human experience which he keeps coming back to. Each painting is both a personal narrative and an invitation for viewers to connect with their own stories through colour, texture, and emotion. He always comes back to exploring texture.

Painting is how he processes life, but it's also how he connects with people. Every piece starts with his own experiences, thoughts and emotions, yet he is interested in those universal moments we all share. Love, loss, hope, confusion, resilience, joy. The stuff that makes us human. He wants people to stand in front of his work and feel something. He wants them to find their own story within his. If a painting sparks a memory, starts a conversation, or makes someone feel understood, then a genuine connection has been made. That connection between artist, artwork and viewer is at the heart of everything he creates.
